For centuries, the Indigenous peoples of the Plains preserved their histories through art. As they were increasingly displaced by settlers in the 19th century, this practice became both more difficult and more essential. While hides and cloth were traditionally used as canvases, paper eventually replaced them as a more portable and accessible medium.
One of the primary vessels for these visual histories was the ledger book—originally used by settlers to record inventory. Native artisans repurposed these books, drawing with pencils, paints, and crayons to document their stories, cultural practices, and significant events. What was once used to catalog settler property became a powerful tool to preserve the identities and histories of the Plains peoples.
The Blackwing 574 Ledger Book is inspired by these historical ledger books. It features a multi-textured vegan leather and suede cover and 152 numbered ledger pages. Whether you use it as a ledger or to document your own stories, this book honors the rich cultural history of the Plains tribes.
